People Don’t Take, Trips Take People
The island was formerly owned by an Arab who used it for the confinement of refractory slaves, but no prisoners were ever properly housed there; instead, the island became a quarantine station for the yellow fever epidemic. The actual jail was built in 1893, hence the name “PRISON ISLAND”, and is still standing.
About Package
A trip to Prison Island in a small wooden motorized boat is a must when visiting Zanzibar. The island once used for the detention of recalcitrant slaves is now watched over by giant tortoises, some over 100 years old. The beach is superb and the crystal clear sea excellent for swimming, snorkeling, fishing and diving; a perfect way to relax.
